Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) on coastal ice in Northwest Fjord, eastern Greenland

Behold the biggest predator on land or ice. Superbly insulated against the cold, polar bears are uniquely suited to life in iced-over regions like Greenland. However, due to climate change, summers have grown longer in the Arctic, cutting short the bears’ hunting season. While still not listed as endangered, they’re considered a vulnerable species. Fear not for our polar bear pal here, though. Judging by its full, healthy coat, this cold-loving carnivore is well fed, its high perch helping it spot any seals unfortunate enough to surface.
