Bizarre rock formations in Valle della Luna, Capo Testa, Sardinia, Italy

Perhaps the group of hippies that settled this Sardinian cove in the 1960s named it the Valle della Luna, or Valley of the Moon, as a nod to the then-raging Space Race. (Or could it have been inspired by some other out-of-this-world trip?) It definitely wasn’t referring to the bright blue waves or green shrubbery – though the dust-toned stones around here have a certain lunar character. In any case, the moon commune proved persistent, populating the cove’s nooks and crannies well into the 2020s – and their spaced-out name for the place stuck.
