One high light

You can’t tell at this zoom level, but we’re looking at the tallest lighthouse in the United States. Standing over 60 metres from base to top and boasting a distinctive candy-stripe paint pattern, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse used to rise just a few paces from the beachy shores of the Outer Banks. But in 1999, it had to be relocated from the unstable sands. Now set 457 metres inland, this still-operational North Carolina icon is one of the tallest structures ever moved.
